Double-ended Trappola pack by Joseph Glanz, Vienna, late 19th century.
This fine Trappola pack of 36 double-ended playing-cards with Italian suit symbols was published by Joseph Glanz, Vienna, late 19th century. An inscription on the ace of clubs reads “Jos. Glanz in Wien”. On the 7 of roses (coins) is the legend “Fabrik: IV. Kleinschmidgasse No. 3 Wien”. The red & blue tax stamp on the 10 of roses was in use in Austria from 1877 to 1881. Joseph Glanz acquired Max Uffenheimer (Vienna) in 1848 and Johann Ritter & Cie in 1870. The business was sold to Piatnik in 1899.

Amongst my achievements is producing a limited-edition replica of a 17th-century English pack using woodblocks and stencils—a labour of love. Today, the World of Playing Cards is a global collaborative project, with my son Adam serving as the technical driving force behind its development.
